KB3163813 CU12 Known Issue – Incorrect Posting amounts – Shipment Packing slip posting

$

We are pleased to announce the re-release of KB3163813 with title “CU12 Known Issue – Incorrect Posting amounts – Shipment Packing slip posting”.

KB3163813 was originally shipped in September 2016, with title “SO processing performance issue”. It was released as a separate hotfix and also included in Microsoft Dynamics AX2012 R3 CU12. The original hotfix can, in the scenarios mentioned below, cause incorrect amounts to be posted in the general ledger, when processing a Sales order packing slip posting. These incorrect postings will cause reconciliation discrepancies between the inventory subledger and general ledger.

Below are the known scenarios where the issue is likely to occur.

Known scenarios

  1. WMSII scenario:

  • The released product is associated with an item model group where Post physical inventory to ledger = True or Post to Deferred Revenue Account on sales delivery = True, and
  • Sales order line lot ID is split based on output orders and grouped in the same shipment, and
  • Sales packing slip is posted from Inventory management>Common>Shipments.

  1. Warehouse Management (WHS) scenario:
  • The released product is a warehouse (WHS) management enabled item, and
  • The released product is associated with an item model group where Post physical inventory to ledger = True or Post to Deferred Revenue Account on sales delivery = True, and
  • Sales order line lot ID is split based on loads, and
  • Sales packing slip is posted from any of the forms under path Warehouse management>Common>Shipments>.

If the original KB has been deployed and one of the two scenarios has occurred, the voucher associated with the sales order packing slip posting is likely to result in overstated monetary amounts. As a result, the general ledger most likely will not reconcile against the inventory subledger. The inventory subledger will however have the correct physical monetary amount.

Exceptions

Below are the 2 exceptions where the voucher associated with the sales order packing slip posting will have correct monetary amounts, when the original KB has been deployed and one of the two scenarios has occurred.

  1. If the original KB3163813 has been deployed and the sales line has either a project association or the legal entity is Russia (RU), then the voucher associated with the sales order packing slip posting will have the correct monetary amounts.
  2. If the original KB3163813 has been deployed and sales order packing slip is posted from the sales order form or from the Sales and marketing>Periodic>Sales update>Packing Slip, then the voucher associated with the sales order packing slip posting will also have correct monetary amounts.

Re-released KB

This issue has been fixed and KB3163813 has been re-released with the updated title “CU12 Known Issue – Incorrect Posting amounts – Shipment Packing slip posting”. Customers who deployed the original KB3163813 “SO processing performance issue” are advised to deploy the re-released KB (KB3163813“CU12 Known Issue – Incorrect Posting amounts – Shipment Packing slip posting”).

This re-released KB is available for Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3.

App Source (D365O Tech Conference)

Application stores are a mainstay of every modern operating system. Microsoft is working towards bringing this concept to the business application space.

The Dynamics 365 App Source concept allows ISVs and partners to bring their addons to a centralized marketplace. App Source can help partners and customers find business users and customers. On the flip side, customers can find validated solutions that have gone through a validation and approval process.

Unlike a traditional App Store, business apps are generally more complex to implement than a PC or mobile app. Many times code, business processes, and data need to be tested and promoted to various systems to make the solution work. The Dynamics 365 for Operations App Source site connects to a management toolkit called Lifecycle Services that helps strategically deploy the key assets into various environments.

At the tech conference, Shefy Manayil Kareem (@Shefymk) from Microsoft discussed the following key features of App Source:

  • A new publishing portal for Dynamics 365 due later in 2017
  • For ISVs, improved actionable insights for App Source hits and leads
  • New predictable trial experience
  • Announcement of “Test Drive”, where a managed environment is already running and ISVs can temporarily allow access to an environment for a prospective customer
  • Leveraging multiple components from D365 Operations, Sales, PSA, PowerBI, Common Data Service, and Power Apps
  • Reviews and ratings displayed in App Source based on the trial experience

The App Source concept is a few years old, and continues to round into form. Key upcoming features like Test Drive should lead to simpler trial experiences should significantly increase the value of having a solution on App Source. Ultimately, ISVs and partners hope to decrease the time for prospects to investigate the features of an product and drive sales.

Common Data Service (D365 Tech Conference)

The Common Data Service (CDS) has been a much discussed concept since the middle of 2016 when Dynamics 365 was first announced. The way this feature is described sometimes seems like CDS is the unicorn of the Dynamics 365 world – it solves any problem.

Sometimes what gets lost in this story is the basics – CDS is a new, simplified database concept. The advantage of the new CDS approach is a faster setup, deployment, and management of the data model, user interfaces, and integrations.

Environments

Environments group features together in CDS including:

  • A collection of tables and table relationships – aka creating a database
  • Publishing Power Apps aka a user interface
  • Integration and mapping tools connected to Dynamics 365

Common Data Model

The CDM is the definition of tables and table relationships. The Microsoft published CDM is geared towards the Dynamics 365 entities and used for integrating multiple D365 products.

Power Apps

In many of the CDS demos Microsoft shows Power Apps with CDS, which sometimes conflates the technology. The database components of CDS don’t require a Power App to be used.

Power Apps are most…powerful when they combine requirements from multiple systems into a single experience. For example, there may be multiple systems that do issue or task management, and each system may require its own fields. A Power App can be created with all the fields required across all systems, then the integration features to push issues into each system will work swimmingly.

Integrations

CDS entities eventually will be used to pass data back and forth between Dynamics 365 databases. There’s a focus by Microsoft to provide some scenario based integrations for things like Order to Cash scenarios between Dynamics 365 Sales and Operations.

There are a couple of mechanisms for passing data back and forth. Microsoft Flow is most commonly used in demos because it supports many products, but there’s also a more “native” integration feature that will pass data more efficiently for Dynamics 365. The integration features also include data transformation logic.

Templates

Templates are used to deploy the CDM, PowerApps, and Flows/Integrations as an Environment.

Admin Center

The Admin Center is a portal for designing, publishing, and maintaining the CDS environment.

This portal also manages the security. They key components of security like table level and record level security are in the toolkit.

Summary

There is a lot of interesting technology around the CDS. But right now it seems like the CDS is a solution in search of a problem. There needs to be simple examples of the technology solving specific problems for Dynamics 365 for Operations customers to jump in on this new feature set.

Microsoft will probably hate the comparison , but I think of CDS in the same way as people used to use Access databases. Access databases were simple, limited, specific tools; many times they were disposable as technology evolved. Conceptually CDS may be an evolution of that story. If the business use case is longer term, it may be better to build features and UIs directly in a Dynamics 365 product.

New Configuration Copy Features (D365 Tech Conference)

D365 for Operations needs a simpler way to define and export groups of entities from a source environment, and transform and import data into a target environment.

Microsoft is building some brand new (and long needed) tools for importing and exporting configurations between companies, environments, and default/template data environments. Mike Falkner led the session demoing the new features.

Define and Export

The Data Management UI is getting a refresh to be more usable in a number of areas:

  • Better overall organization of Workspace
  • Lists instead of tiles
  • Easier picking of entities into a group, including mass picking
  • Manual and automatic sequencing improvements

Transform and Import

There weren’t demoable features ready on this side of the equation. The general approach is supposed to be hard coded rules that can transform specific entities. The import should be simplified by more quickly selecting and importing multiple Data Packages.

Summary

I’m very happy to see more features in this area. The current features are workable, but every step takes longer than ideal. Look for features to come out this spring, with a quick and iterative release cadence.

D365 Tech: Deployment options

$

When Dynamics 365 for Operations was introduced to the world, it was a stunner because it was meant to be a cloud-based ERP system. Period. This caused quite a bit of commotion amongst the AX user community due to a lot of concerns about the security of data in the cloud and industry regulations regarding location and accessibility of data. When the AX user community balked at the notion of a cloud-only ERP, Microsoft finally agreed to develop a local business data, or on-prem, version of Dynamics 365 for Operations after initially saying that if the users wanted on-prem, they could use Dynamics AX 2012 R3.

During the keynote at D365 Tech and during an in-depth session on deployment options, I was able to get a clearer picture of the offerings that will soon be available. It appears that the cloud version of Dynamics 365 is ready to go as several companies have already implemented this and are moving forward. There is a hybrid model for deployment in addition to the local business data (on-prem) version of Dynamics 365, but neither one is completely ready yet. Keep reading for more info on the deployment options available for users.

Screenshot of deployment options for Dynamics 365
I snapped this photo of a slide shown during the keynote. Great information!

Cloud

The biggest thing that has been stressed about the cloud deployment option at D365 Tech has been the ease of use, short implementation cycle, and Microsoft's future plans to have updates fully automated. This is supposed to reduce costs in the long run for businesses since they won't have to keep and maintain a datacenter. Cloud environments are easily integrated with other functionality over the cloud such as PowerApps, Power BI, and Flow through the Common Data Service.

Follow Rachel Profitt's blog, www.dynamics365lady.com to learn how to set up the ultimate Dynamics 365 environment. She is currently walking users through, step-by-step, how to set up Azure, LCS, and eventually get to a full Dynamics 365 demo environment with Operations, Sales, and all of the Common Data Service (CDS) offerings.

Dynamics 365 in the cloud is available now.

Cloud + edge

Originally referred to as the hybrid model of Dynamics 365, where some business data is transacted through the cloud and some on-prem (these instances are now called edges). This could be an ideal environment for users with a proprietary process or massive amounts of operations data that they do not want transacted over the cloud.

Edges, or local business data that is transacted in your local datacenter, can be set up multiple ways. They can be set up by site, which seems to be what Microsoft's vision for this is. Possibly good for businesses with sites that have poor internet connectivity. Another way they can be set up is by functional area. An edge can be set up for MRP or Production control.

How does this work?

During the demo of this deployment option, the cloud environment had a blue background/icons and the edge had a green background/icons. Transactions were created in the edge, and within 5 minutes the data was synced to the overall cloud environment. It was neat to see, but heavily dependent on our conference Wi-Fi, which we all know can be troublesome for demos. The Microsoft engineers said data can be synced from edge to cloud, from cloud to edge, or you could keep them completely separate and never sync them if that's your desire. Transactions are separated by a data area ID to avoid overlap and potential issues with number sequences.

This appeared to be a deployment option that still needed some work. There was some promising functionality, but the Microsoft engineers even admitted that this was not a perfect option, but had a lot of potential. Expect it to be released in the second half of 2017.

Local business data

The local business data deployment option is what users are currently calling the on-prem environment. This requires users to have their own datacenter. It was warned that using the local business data option would limit the functionality of the cloud based CDS options such as PowerApps and Power BI, but there seemed to be differing opinions on that since people are actively using Power BI with their on-prem environments now. Even if this is limited, I would expect Microsoft to come up with something for these users to utilize that technology in the future.

This is very close to being released. Expect it after Q2 in 2017 when pricing is announced.

How to solve Microsoft Office Add-in authentication error in Dynamics 365 for Operations

$

However I’m currently extremely busy on several projects and also preparing some speaker sessions for a local Dynamics community and also the Summit EMEA 2017, I would like to share a solution to solve an authentication error when using the Microsoft Office Add-in. You will probably not face this issue when you are using machines in your own domain.

The problem

Using my own laptop accessing a test environment of a customer I wanted to Open the customers in Excel. In Dynamics 365 for Operations you can click the Office button to Export data or Open data in Excel. What is the difference between Export and Open here? Well, Export will create an Excel file with static data where Open will create an Excel file with embedded Office add-on to be able to refresh and also publish data back to Dynamics 365.

During login an Authentication error occurs for me when accessing this customer sandbox environment from my work laptop.

Looking at some error details the next error is raised:

AADSTS50058: A silent sign-in request was sent but no user is signed in. The cookies used to represent the user’s session were not sent in the request to Azure AD. This can happen if the user is using Internet Explorer or Edge, and the web app sending the silent sign-in request is in different IE security zone than the Azure AD endpoint (login.microsoftonline.com). Trace ID: ae185b5c-b397-4b49-b3d1-790e1c9a67aa Correlation ID: 04007e36-a31d-4968-92c5-3fe70bfa5f59

In simple words: My laptop is not part of the domain of the customer. When trying to login, you will then continuously notice the attempts fails. Again and again and again…

The solution

When you click the User menu, you will get a menu with the option to Sign out.

When you sign out, the next form will then be presented. Usually you will close a browser, but in this case, the login page is embedded in the Excel add-on. The User menu is not visible and at first sight, there is no option to continue. So we are a bit confused now…

When you click the form space a small menu icon will be presented which can  be used to open a Microsoft Dynamics menu. Then click Reload. You can also right click on the white space to get a pop-up menu with the option for reloading the page. The step to really sign out can be avoided. If you are able to open the Microsoft Dynamics menu, you just have to Reload the page to get rid of the silent sign-in attempt.

When the page is reloaded, you can sign-in with the required login credentials.

When you have provided the correct credentials, you can continue using the Excel add-on.

That’s all for now. Till next time!

D365 Tech: Licensing and Pricing for Dynamics 365

This topic seemed to cause more confusion than clarification, but it was a session that generated a lot of discussion! Here is what I gleaned from the Licensing and Pricing session I attended.

User types

There are two types of users that get licenses in Dynamics 365, light users and full users. I made the comparison to functional and enterprise users, but I am not convinced that they are the same!

Light users: Get access to Dynamics 365 for Team Members, Enterprise Edition. This means that they get access to all basic functionality. They can execute basic processes and use embedded business intelligence.

Full users: Get access to all Apps - Operations, Sales, Field Service, Customer Service, Project Service Automation, and PowerApps. These users have access to everything, then have to deal with the constraints of security beyond that point.

Pricing

Here is the Pricing that was shown to us:

Slide with per user pricing for Dynamics 365

This is per user/per month pricing. It can be variable as you can pay for what you are currently using. Here is a link to Microsoft's pricing page that can help you calculate and sort out your users and which types they would be: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/pricing

Pricing has not been established yet for the Cloud + Edge hybrid deployment or Local business data on-prem deployment options. Local business data pricing should be available by 4/1/2017.

Support

All licenses come with a subscription for basic Microsoft support. Companies can upgrade their support plan to Enhanced, Professional, or Premier support based on their needs. The infographic below provides some great info about the service offerings and differences between the plans.

Discounts

Microsoft is very motivated to get users over to Dynamics 365. Any customers who are AX or CRM customers as of 10/31/2016 are eligible for a 40% discount if they move to the Cloud deployment option. This can mean substantial savings (and it was alluded to the fact that you're basically getting the Sales app for free with this discount) but there is a catch. This is not a forever discount and it expires in 2019. At the time that it expires, the price jumps back up to the current market price for cloud licensing.

Analytical Workspaces (D365O Tech Conference)

Last year I blogged about Workspaces in Dynamics 365 as a concept. At this year’s Tech Conference, TJ Vasser talked about some of the newly available features on the reporting side. TJ highlighted his own blog post about the various reporting options available for Dynamics 365 for Operations.

Analytical Workspaces

Up until March 2017, the only option for bringing Power BI content into D365O was to publish content packs in PowerBI.com, and each user had to link a Workspace to that published content pack. With Platform Update 4, it’s now possible to embed Power BI content packs directly into a Workspace. Embedding Power BI into Workspaces should remove much of the effort from the end user, and shifts the work to reporting analysts and developers.

The major components of the embedded experience are:

  • Adding a new form, or adding a Workspace tab.
  • Defining the .pbix files that are embedded in the Workspace.
  • Writing a controller class that links the .pbix file to the form, manages filters and security, and defines drill-through experiences.

It’s Not All Rainbows

There are many caveats to this story – when investigating D365O and Power BI features, it’s always a good idea to prototype the entire process before building out any specific feature. Some of the caveats for the embedded reports include:

  • Currently only Entity store is supported; using your own database (BYODB) is unsupported.
  • Embedded Power BI requires a developer and code promotion; publishing to PowerBI.com is easier to make fast changes.
  • It is possible to drill through from the embedded report, but each drill-through experiences require an Event handler in code.
  • There are better options for dynamic filtering experiences, but these also require development.

 Summary

Simplifying the user experience and bringing reporting into the app will make embedded Power BI a powerful tool. I anticipate quite a bit of development effort to provide awesome experiences. I also suspect the change management process for embedded could be problematic. It’s a good step in the right direction and is worth exploring.

D365 Tech: AX 2012 Upgrade Path

$
0
0
By far, the most informative session I attended was about the AX 2012 Upgrade Path. This hasn't really made the rounds yet and it's still pretty high level, but the plan seems solid and was very encouraging!

IMPORTANT TO NOTE: The upgrade tools won't be available until July 1, and will start with AX 2012 R3 and move backwards to include functionality for AX 2012 R2 and then AX 2012 RTM.

As of right now, the informally named Upgrade Analyzer is the core of your upgrade from AX 2012. This product effectively helps to analyze, execute, and validate the code and data that you wish to migrate from your 2012 environment through an LCS diagnostic service. The nice thing about it is that it can be used on a backup of your database at any time, so if you want to analyze your data to see what kind of issues may lie ahead, it will be available for you to use!

Getting Started

In order to get started with this process, you need a few prerequisites. You will need to have a VSTS account and a LCS account. So, what does that mean? VSTS is the Visual Studio Team Services. You can sign up for an account through https://www.visualstudio.com/team-services/. LCS is Lifecycle Services. This might be something that you have heard of since this is how Microsoft handles any communication with you regarding your environment such as hotfixes and cumulative updates. Basically, this is where you manage the lifecycle of your Dynamics products! You can find LCS at https://lcs.dynamics.com/.

Once those accounts are set up, upload a copy of your model store to the LCS code upgrade tile. This will generate a massive excel report with hundreds of tabs with plenty of information. Basically, you will see a tab for every bit of functionality in the system and the code that is included in that functionality.

For more information, go to

Analyze

The Upgrade Analyzer is supposed to be able run on the copy of your model store and give you some really great info and suggestions for some improvements to make to your AX 2012 environment prior to your upgrade. Examples of the analysis that will occur include the following:

Data clean up

In Dynamics 365, database storage is going to be allocated based on total amount of users. If you go over that limit, you will incur a subscription cost. This tool will show you what can be deleted and how much space can be saved, helping you to save money and upgrade downtime.

SQL configuration

The upgrade analyzer will review your SQL configuration and recommend environment optimizations that your DBA can make prior to your upgrade process.

Deprecated features

This one kind of hurts... but it's also kind of beautiful. The upgrade analyzer will identify which features will not be available moving forward, giving users an earlier view of gaps that might be missing when the upgrade process begins.

Pre-upgrade checklist

A pre-upgrade checklist will be generated giving users tasks to complete in order to have a successful upgrade. This may include installing hotfixes and adding UPN (domain suffix) to user accounts.

Execute

In the next steps, you will begin to execute the plan that was made from the analysis of the data in the previous steps. You can begin by deploying a sandbox in Azure through LCS and working through the clean up tasks. Some important pieces of information I picked up from this were:

ISVs

Ignore any information that comes through the analysis stage from your ISVs (Independent Software Vendors). Request a new version for Dynamics 365. There is no point in trying to upgrade what you currently have installed as it will be difficult to transition. Most ISVs already have their offerings available for Dynamics 365. if you're not sure, just ask!

Work toward a successful compile

This one gave me a bit of heartburn, and I heard an audible groan in the room when this was announced. I am going to put the next sentence in bold so everyone understands. If there is a compile error, you WILL NOT be able to open Dynamics 365. Work toward an error free environment because a small error in code can take your entire environment down. Testing will be key in Dynamics 365.

Start at the bottom and work your way up

What this means is to start with the lowest package and work upwards. Start with the platform and foundation and just keep working through those compile errors because they all reference each other and this will be a better process for your environment.

Development tips

Understand the model split implications. This can cause extra work if you don't understand. Refactor all old code as extensions. This will save time and money in the future as code will then be upgradable in the future to newer versions of Dynamics 365.

Data upgrade process

There will be a deployable package for the data upgrade on the MajorVersionDataUpgrade framework. There will be no scripts in this package as those are ReleaseUpdate X++ classes.

Script process

Script execution work in a similar manner to previous upgrade versions. They will be done in batch which will figure out the script dependencies, run them in the right order, then give a pre-sync/sync/post-sync/sync of your environment.

Errors

There is a high probability that you will run into errors. Luckily, Microsoft has put together a wiki for this:

Validate

Obviously, validation is going to be a huge part of the upgrade process. There will be an upgrade validation tool to run that will perform an automated smoke test to help validate the success of the upgrade run by doing the following:

Smoke test examples

  • All servers started
  • All server components accessible
  • Review that expected data is there
  • General ledger reconciles to 2012
  • Inventory reconciles to 2012

From there, users can review the sandbox environment and if everything is running as expected, a cutover plan can be executed and Dynamics 365 can be deployed into a live production environment. Piece of cake, right? Only time will tell.

Conclusion

It sounds like Microsoft has a pretty solid plan for the upgrade process. It's going to have some pain points like any other upgrade, but they do seem to be actively working to make this as easy as possible on the users.

My favorite part is that I can run the upgrade analyzer on my model store prior to even making a decision. Thanks goes to Microsoft for that bit of functionality and allowing the users to have some insight into how easy or difficult our upgrade path will be. I am encouraged by the path this is taking, Remind me of this after I run the upgrade analyzer.
