How to rename an Object in VisualStudio[Dynamics365/AX7]

Hi Folks,

Many times we need to duplicate an standard object and do the required changes and system gives warning while rename. Same caused error during project build.

Problem: While renaming any object in Visual studio project system throw below warning

“Some of the files you are renaming or moving will be located outside of the project's binding root. The item(s) <objectName>.xml will not be source controlled if you continue with this rename.”

image

If you just continue with change , you may get errors while project/solution build.

Possible reason: If you are using TFS and this new object are not added to source code you’' will get this error.

Suggest Solution: Add this new object in Source control by right click on object and select “Add file  to source control”

image

Now you should be able to rename it.

This works for me perfectly. If you got some other solution to fix this issue plz keep share your feedback or links to other posts.

AX Word of the Week: Contoso

Ok, so maybe this isn't TRULY an AX word, but anyone who has ever used an AX demo environment has seen the word Contoso.

So, what is Contoso?

Contoso is the Microsoft demo company that is used to show the functionality of AX. It's not just limited to AX though. You may see Contoso pop up in other products as well! Contoso is a very diverse company. It sells everything from HDMI cables to orange juice. And if you visit their website, www.contoso.com, you might be redirected to another large corporation's official website.

So, if you've ever been like me and laughed at some of the crazy names (looking at you, Julia Funderburk) or found @AliciaContoso on Twitter, you may have spent too much time in an AX demo environment.

screenshot of interaction between AX Soup and Alicia Thomber from Contoso on Twitter.
See? Contoso is real and so is Alicia Thomber and Julia Funderburk.

If you're wondering what in the world I am talking about, spin up a demo AX environment and give it a whirl. I have learned so much about the functionality of AX just by creating a demo environment and playing around. It's a great experience and the worst thing that can happen is that you find some unknown AX functionality that helps a coworker do their job more efficiently. It's really hard to break a demo environment, and you won't have to explain that one to your boss if you do break it. Have fun!

With prior versions of SSIS, the you couldn’t save online authentication with OData connections. If you wanted to use it, you had to wrap the messages using c# code. Now with the latest SQL 2016 update there was a nice feature that sneaked under the radar.

The OData Connection Manager now supports five modes of authentication.

  • Windows Authentication

The D365 Tech Conference

$

Yes, I am in Seattle this week for the D365 Tech Conference! Don't worry though, I am not completely abandoning my AX followers for Dynamics 365 for Operations. I know that there will be people using AX for years to come and I will continue to provide content for AX users as long as I am using AX. But this week, I am all about Dynamics 365.

As I arrive in Seattle, I am reminded of the first Convergence I attended (for those of you who haven't heard of this, it was the premier Dynamics conference hosted by Microsoft every year in March). I remember being completely overwhelmed with information, but walking away with newfound knowledge of this ERP solution. It was also there that the importance of the AXUG was reinforced for me as a resource that needed to be utilized. I had heard about it through my partner, but the AXUG Programming Director got me involved with a Customer Advisory Board where I could directly give feedback to Microsoft about AX. That in itself is a huge membership benefit to the AXUG, but other benefits I have reaped from my membership include webinars and Academy classes, attending local chapter meetings, and growing enough in my knowledge to the point where I could host my own webinars and eventually begin writing this blog! I am hoping that this conference will give me that overwhelming surge of new information to process and that it is all beneficial as AX begins to take its new shape into Dynamics 365 for Operations.

While AX is a good, solid ERP product, I feel that it is also important to keep up with new and emerging technology. Prior to getting into any new product, it's important to gather information to make the best, most informed decision for your company. All this week, I plan on blogging about what I learn so that you may also glean some helpful tidbits about the product we are affectionately calling D3FO (because Dynamics 365 for Operations is a mouthful). If you aren't subscribed yet, there's no better time than now to subscribe to AX Soup by email.

I am looking forward to learning more about Dynamics 365 and everything that this entails. Keep an eye out for blog posts all week!

Top 3 “must haves” for equipment rental ERP software

$
0
0

Just in the past few years we’ve seen a shift in how equipment-driven rental companies are thinking about their market niches—primarily that they’re looking at rental through the prism of omni-channel retail and commercial sales.

Top 3 “must haves” for equipment rental ERP software: That’s transforming traditional business models—one example among many is the shift to online offerings and transactions for equipment rental and services. Other changes to business as usual include 24/7 collaborations with third-parties, lots of new options for renting and things to rent, and a widespread embrace of mobility, from Mobile field service to mobile apps to leveraging the Internet of Things.

That’s just brushing the surface of how equipment rental industries are changing. You’ll find many areas to look into, and what they will all have in common is a willingness to embrace technology innovations. That’s been a hard task for equipment rental companies, who need extremely reliable software that can handle complex, industry-specific financial and operational demands for rental and integrate everything with ERP. The good news is that rental companies are finding ISV solutions that pay close attention to rental challenges and sculpt their offerings so that they wrap tradition and innovation together. Three important areas to look at:

  1. Pre-configured software packages for equipment rental and services. While it’s really not possible to “plug and play” a rental software package that can handle complex needs, you can find solutions with industry and business templates that let you map functionality to your specific needs, deploy efficiently, and even standardize “custom” training for IT and end users. Within the Microsoft Dynamics world this is part of Lifecycle Services Management. Equipment rental industries can save significant time, effort, and cost when they select rental software from an ISV that combines the latest technologies with expert handling of pre-configuration possibilities.
  2. Software that gives you maximum flexibility. Equipment rental companies are looking at constant change regardless their industry niche. We hear often from businesses that one of the biggest struggles they have with an otherwise rugged rental solution is that it’s rigid. And no matter how strong the asset management or quote-to-invoice features, today’s rental software needs also to be flexible. You may be working with market trends such as mobility and the shift to online. Or you might find soon that you want to deepen third-party collaborations, or expand rental options, offerings, or locations. In truth, what you know today may change tomorrow, so you’ll want a modular solution that’s built on an open platform, with a strong backbone of integration and access to information. It should be ready to give you plenty of functionality now, but designed to let you change at any time with minimal disruption.
  3. Software that balances innovation with security. Equipment rental companies deal with high volumes of sensitive information, and of course you need to assure customers and your own business that you can store and protect data and records. Your rental software should rate highly for role-tailored security that allows for information to flow easily but be filtered in the right way. The quality of integration with your ERP system is going to be a strong measure for your security quality, so look for ISVs that rate highly for the business system you use or are considering. And keep in mind thaequipment rental ERP softwaret if the software you’re exploring offers strong configuration templates and well-designed flexibility, it’s a good bet that the ISV has taken the same care with security. It’s part of the package!
